From the time I was a young kid, I did a lot of fishing with my dad, but never any hunting.
As I approached my 12th birthday, i told my dad that I wanted to get into hunting. He was a pheasant hunter, but had not hunted for many years. He went out and bought a golden retriever, Sady, and trained her to hunt. That is where I got my start in hunting and I was hooked. That year i went up to northern wisconsin deer hunting on my step-dads land and shot my first deer.
My passion grew from there. I got into duck hunting, turkey hunting and bow hunting on my own. As much as i love to duck hunt and turkey hunt, bow hunting deer still comes out on top. I get a lot of my duck hunting done in the early season, during "The October Lull", or when the weather isn't cooperating for me to be in a tree stand later in the year. Turkey hunting in spring is one of my favorite things as well. Whether I am taking my fiancé or my mom in hopes of getting a long beard, or it is my own season trying to get my first turkey with the bow, I often find myself "taking the long way around" just to get a little bit of deer scouting/shed hunting in.
I have been very lucky to hunt all over the state. From the farmland in southeast Wisconsin to the hill country of southwest Wisconsin to something in the middle in central Wisconsin each presents a very different type of hunting. I think a big part of the passion I have for hunting deer is that I never stop learning and I am constantly thinking about what I can do to increase my odd's of harvesting a mature buck.
Once late season bowhunting wraps up and there is snow on the ground, I spend nearly every weekend hunting coyotes with a group of guys running hounds. Not only does it fill the time until spring turkey season, it also is a ton of fun and great for getting rid of predators.
Through the years I helped my dad out training his german shorthaired pointers and have always enjoyed working with hunting dogs. Their determination, eagerness to please and passion for what they do is amazing! I just got my own Fox Red Lab, and can't wait to get him trained on ducks and shed antlers.
